Coal Pit is dedicated to producing outstanding wines from their BioGro organically certified vineyard and on-site winery. Located on 7 hectares of glacially formed schist-based soils on elevated north-facing slopes, their vineyard yields wines of remarkable structure and elegance. The on-site winery allows ultimate control from vine to wine, ensuring that grapes are picked at their optimal ripeness.
Sustainability is at the heart of Coal Pit’s ethos, with a commitment to inter-generational sustainability through initiatives like their native planting programme and membership in the Porto Protocol – a global wine community focused on climate action.
Coal Pit has been producing elegant and bold wines since 2006.
Rosie’s decision to construct a winery in 2007 was integral in shifting the boutique vineyard’s focus towards premium quality, allowing complete control from vine to wine.
Situated in the heart of the Coal Pit vineyard, the building faces north toward the Crown Range Mountains and the Kawarau River. The winery comprises a tasting room, a temperature and humidity controlled barrel room, laboratory, meeting rooms and winemaker’s accommodation.
The Coal Pit wines have long been recognised internationally, with the most recent accolades received for the 2019 ‘Tiwha’ Pinot Noir at the 2023 International Wine Challenge; notably being awarded the New Zealand Pinot Noir Trophy, Otago Pinot Noir Trophy & Gibbston Pinot Noir Trophy as well as the Gold medal.
